This week we have welcomed Government clarification of how many people can sit together around the dining table for the festive feast this Christmas.

Alongside turkey farmers and food retailers we had feared there might be a drop off in orders for bigger birds this year because of Government restrictions on how many people from different households could eat together.

But now the Government has announced that restrictions are to be relaxed for five days allowing groups from three households to be together for Christmas there is expected to be a rush of new turkey orders.

We have already seen brisk trade from people placing their Christmas meat orders in good time ahead of the Yuletide festivities.

We provide free range turkeys from a farm on Portsdown Hill for our customers and both us and the farmer are confident that almost all the birds would be sold.

General Manager Harry King said: “There’s no doubt that people have been concerned about whether they should be ordering as big a turkey for this year because they just didn’t know how many people they would have to feed on the day.

“Now it is a bit clearer what the rules will be for Christmas this year I am sure we will see a flurry of activity as people realise that they may have under-budgeted for this year’s roast and may need something a bit bigger.

“In any case, not many people eat the whole of the turkey in one sitting on Christmas Day. There are always leftovers, and if you have ordered a bigger bird there’s always the prospect of a turkey casserole, turkey curry and lots of turkey sandwiches in the run up to New Year.”

It is not just turkeys that have been an issue for this year. We supply the full range of Christmas meats for customers – including ham, beef, goose, game, duck and lamb and many others.

Store owner Kayleigh Collett said: “We know things are going to be a bit different this year but we are very confident that we will be able to supply just what our customers need for this very special time of year.”
